The Chicago Cubs was viewed as the worst team in the MLB, period. No other team had experienced the loses and pain that the Cubs had experienced. Now, they are considered one of the best teams in Baseball. People believe that the Cubs are suddenly the favorites to win the 2017 World Series, and that they will be a force to be reckoned with. However, is that exactly true? Do not get me wrong, I love the Cubs, and was happy to see them win the World Series. But that does not take away from the fact that there is a lot of hype, and some of it is probably bandwagon fans.
Before the Cubs won the last World Series, people considered the Cubs a strong, and good team (at least for the past two seasons). However, they could never make it far in the playoffs. Cubs were deemed as “Good in regular season, but not in postseason”. They could do alright in the regular season, but could not win the pennate or Series. The Cubs were considered the laughing stock of the MLB, never able to achieve “Great”.
That all changed when they won the World Series. Fans loved how a team that has failed for decades won a Series. Chicago was ecstatic, the sports world was ecstatic. No one is doubting after the World Series that Cubs are the best, because they are obviously the top dog, right? Fans and reporters are raving about how good the Cubs are, and how they are a favorite to win the Series. Most of this is hype from an emotional, and historic World Series. Settle done, annalists.
What if another outcome had happened, would the talk still be the same about the Cubs? If the Cubs had lost, or failed to make it to the World Series, we definitely would not be talking about how they are going to return to the World Series. If the Cubs had lost game 7 of the World Series, all of us would be saying, “It’s the same old Cubs”. Nobody raved over the Royals or Giants as much as the media has for the Chicago Cubs. It is because it is an amazing story, and media loves to magnify and expand any opportunity they see. Yes, they are good, but the World Series is around 8 months away, so before everyone buys “Chicago Cubs 2018 Champion’s” hats, put the hype away. At least wait until we have seen the Cubs play some ball this season, but until then, I will say that there is way to much hype and faith in the Cubs right now. But you never know.
