The Jim Brown Controversy: Quick Analysis on The Media Recent Attack on Jim Brown

I know I have not written for almost two weeks, and then I saw an article titled, “Jim Brown, Once a Hero, maybe never should have been one”.  At first, I was taken aback a little bit.  When was the last time Jim Brown was in the Mainstream News?  I was curious about what the author (Carron J. Phillips) meant.  So I, being the curious person that I am, clicked the article.  And boy, oh, boy…This article was spewing with controversial opinions…Which means we should talk about it…Right?  Right??

So, if you have not read the article, I will provide a link here, and at the bottom of the page.  Go read the article for yourself, and tell me what you thought about it.  If you are too busy (or too important) to be bothered with clicking links to news articles, I will give you a quick summary of his article.

Jim Brown’s Social Activism

Phillip Carron starts his article by giving a little background behind Jim Brown.  He mentions how Jim Brown is considered one of the best running backs in NFL history.  Carron also mentions the many accomplishments Jim Brown has when it comes to social reform, and civil rights issues.  I did not realize how much of an impact Jim Brown has had in the past, so all of it was very interesting.

Jim Brown is a President Trump Supporter

However, Carron starts attacking Jim Brown.  A large part of the article, in some way, talks about how Jim Brown is a Donald Trump supporter.  The article cites a interview that Brown had, where Brown, in a semi-half way, said that he was “Pulling for the President”.  However, Brown also says that the president deserves criticism, but that his main reason for his support of the President is the media.  Brown says the media is “Always pointing fingers”, and “are not doing a doggone thing” to solve the problem.  Brown says that the media kind of pushed him into hoping the president does good, and Brown admits that some “Good things” have came out of the current administration.

Carron also mentions that Jim Brown actually met Donald Trump in Trump Towers to talk about social issues.  Carron likens Jim Brown to a puppet for having the meeting with Trump.

Jim Brown said he would Stand for the National Anthem

The Article goes on, and gets to the actual meat of the article…Jim Brown and the National Anthem.  Carron writes about Jim Brown’s recent comments about the anthem protests.  Jim Brown mentions that he does not understand what the protests are really about.  Jim Brown says that he would stand for the anthem.  Now, Carron failed to provide all of Jim Brown’s comments about the protests.  Although Brown would stand for the anthem personally, Brown said that the players had a right to kneel during the anthem.

“Well, if you take the bottom line, what are we talking about? We’re talking about freedom to express one’s self, and if you don’t break any rules then you have that particular right,” – Jim Brown

However, Carron left that part out of his article.

But strangely enough, that was not the only part Carron left out of his article.  Carron failed to mention one of the main reasons why Jim Brown did not support the anthem.  Jim Brown has said,

“If you have a cause, I think you should organize it, present it in a manner where it’s not only you standing or sitting on one knee, but a lot of people that is gonna get behind each other and do something about it,” Brown said. “If I ask you one question: Who is Colin calling on to follow what he’s talking about?” – Jim Brown

Now I would be interested in hearing what your thoughts are on this specific point?  Do you think that Jim Brown has a point, or do you think Jim Brown is in the wrong?  Tell me in the comment section below.

Jim Brown’s Sketchy (Criminal) past

This is where Carron strikes the hardest blow.  Carron lists around 6 criminal charges that have been brought out against Jim Brown.  Only one of those criminal charges was Jim Brown actually found guilty, while all of the others were either dismissed, acquitted, or he was found not guilty.  Now I am not one to judge, but most of this crimes involved alleged abuse, assault and battery, etc.  So that does look a little shady.  However, it is not surprising, since the majority of Sports Players have a criminal record of some sort.

The Final Blow

Carron ends his article, saying,

I don’t know Brown and have never even been in the same room with him. But as a child, I, like many others, idolized him.

They say you should never meet your heroes because they’re sure to disappoint you.

Brown has done that without an introduction.

Because all I had to do was pay attention to his actions and do some research to figure out he’s never been the man he’s fooled us all into believing he is.

– Carron Phillips

Wow! That is what we call in the blogging business, “A sick burn, dude!” (I apologize, I won’t say that again).  Now I think that is a little harsh.  Now this article is an opinion piece, and we know that Brown and Carron Phillips do not agree on Trump, or the Anthem, so it is hard to tell if Phillips is mad at Brown for his alleged criminal acts, or about his political opinions?  It is hard to not believe that Carron Phillips is taking this whole situation a little more personally than he ought.  However, Carron is absolutely allowed to have his own opinion.

What do you think, SR Nation?

I am interested to see what your thoughts are about this entire situation?  Do you lean more towards Carron Phillips side, or not so much?  Put your thoughts in the comment section below, and remember…Be the best sports fan you can possibly be, and do WLYF!

  • Sounds like Mr. Carron wants some clicks and new followers. I’ve always had a pretty high approval rating of Jim Brown on and off the playing field. The stuff that Brown said about the administration could’ve been said REGARDLESS of who was in there right now, Trump or otherwise. “The media is always pointing fingers … not doing a doggone thing.” The media (news, specifically) is supposed to report, and let the reader/viewer decide for themselves. Opinion pieces are something else, but Carron’s omissions that you re-included (and well articulated, at that) tell the story of an intentional taint. No good, my friend.

Thanks for posting this, and keep up the good work with your site.

  • Brown has a great track record. Sometimes we have to let the chips fall as they may.

  • I understand Kapernick’s stand and respect him for his focus. I also think that Jim Brown has years of life experiences that Colin hasn’t. Jim was there in the 60s and 70s and the social injustices of that time. His observation about being more organized is a valid one. Perhaps Jim should speak to Colin about that. With the times the way they are in this society respect isn’t given where it should be. I may not be a Trump supporter, but I have too many family members and friends who are. I respect their decision. It keeps the peace. And we all need peace.

    • True! In today’s society, persuading people to a different point of view is harder than ever before. The importance of focus, and organization in trying to convince people of anything is higher, now more than ever.

  • Jim Brown was snubbed by our black.President. So Trump.plays to his vanity. Naturally, he’s gonna be a Trump.supporter. But, Carron Phillips never mentions that because it would make Obama look petty and small.
